Becoming Naomi León by Pam Muñoz Ryan. This is a coming-of-age novel by Pam Muñoz Ryan about a quiet Latina girl, whose life with her great-grandmother and younger brother is peaceful until her mother reappears after abandoning her and her brother years earlier.

Moo by Sharon Creech. When Reena, her little brother, Luke, and their parents first move to Maine, Reena doesn’t know what to expect. She’s ready for beaches, blueberries, and all the lobster she can eat. Instead, her parents “volunteer” Reena and Luke to work for an eccentric neighbor named Mrs. Falala, who has a pig named Paulie, a cat named China, a snake named Edna—and that stubborn cow, Zora. This heartwarming story, told in a blend of poetry and prose, reveals the bonds that emerge when we let others into our lives.

Nothing But the Truth by AVI Set in the small New Hampshire town of Harrison, the novel is the story of how ninth-grader Philip Malloy’s efforts to get out of a class with Ms. Narwin, his English teacher, is transformed into a viral story that casts Philip as a patriotic hero and his teacher as a villain.

Seventh Grade English teachers use this as part of their first unit, so please keep any notes for class discussion.
Grade 8

However, Jeremy cannot be protected from everything in Never Better as he ventures out and meets new people.

Tangerine by Edward Bloor Paul Fisher sees the world from behind glasses so thick he looks like a bug-eyed alien.
